Specimen Collection Instructions

Obtain Pre dialysis sample in appropriate tube directly from the arterial access prior to flushing lines.

    1. For central venous catheters, prepare catheter per unit "Central Venous Catheter Procedures", removing Gent/Citrate, Sodium Citrate, or t-PA from both lumens.
    2. Using vacutainer luer adapter, obtain pre dialysis sample.
    3. Do not obtain sample for use as pre-dialysis BUN if hemodialysis has been initiated or if saline or heparin are present in lines.
    4. Proceed with initiation of treatment.

1.0 mL

Stat Turn-around Time:

1 hour from specimen arrival in the Laboratory

Routine Turn-around Time:

Inpatients: 4 hours from specimen arrival in the Laboratory

Outpatients:  24 hours from specimen arrival in the Laboratory
