Light Blue (Sodium Citrate – 3.2%) – Plasma Only |
Specimen Volume and Collection Instructions:
When using a butterfly draw a red top tube or waste tube and discard, then proceed to draw a light blue top tube.
Collection Tube MUST be filled completely. Gently invert the tube 3 to 4 times immediately after collection to ensure proper mixing of blood and anticoagulant.
Special Handling Instructions:
Inpatients: Deliver to Laboratory within 4 hours of collection. Specimens greater than 4 hours will be rejected due to specimen stability.
Outpatients: Un-centrifuged or centrifuged with plasma remaining on top of the cells are stable for 4 hours from time of collection at room temperature.
If unable to deliver to the laboratory within 4 hours of collection:
Centrifuge the light blue top tube
Transfer plasma to an appropriately labeled plastic vial
Centrifuge plasma in the plastic vial a second time to remove the platelets
Transfer sample to another appropriately labeled plastic vial
Label vial PLASMA
Freeze immediately
Stat Turn-around Time:
1 hour from specimen arrival in the laboratory
Routine Turn-around Time:
Inpatients: 4 hours
Outpatients: 24 hours from specimen arrival in the laboratory
