Specimen Handling Instructions

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect the urine sample in a sterile specimen container (with or without boric acid preservative).

2. Excessively bloody or very turbid specimens containing protein, cells, or particulates can inhibit the function of the test.

3. Do not centrifuge to remove particulates.

4. Specimens with any dyes or unnatural color are not acceptable and will be canceled.

 

Transport sample within 24 hours at room temperature or within 1 week refrigerated at 2-8℃, or frozen (-20℃).

In addition to urine for antigen, a sputum for legionella culture should be collected. See Legionella Culture (LEGIO) for details.

Pneumococcal pneumonia is best diagnosed by sputum culture. See Respiratory Culture (RESCX) for details.
